| The subject of the project is symbolising 700th anniversary of the foundation of the Ottoman Empire. Within this context, the aim is to create “a dynamic system of urban open area”, “an urban park” and “a social space”. Spatial continuity of the open areas in urban scale is integrated with cultural continuity. The theme of the “Ottoman Empire” constituted the conceptual approach to the design of the park as a whole, the design of the plastic elements (obelisks) located at the whole park and the monument located at the ceremonial place. There are two main thematic components of the design symbolizing the Ottoman Empire: 1) With the aim to symbolize the 36 sultans, obelisks are designed and located in a spaced-out and open order at the whole park. The dispersion of the obelisks within the whole area also reflects the expansionistic characteristics of the Ottoman Empire. 2) The various activity areas and the thematic areas located in the park are designed as circular planes. These planes are formed by topography and steep rocky grounds. Each of the planes is designed for a certain function required for creating an urban park. Also, each plane represents a certain characteristic feature of Ottomans. Within this context, the project site is both a vast “urban park” and an “open air museum” serving the purpose of passing the Ottoman culture to the future generations. | |
