| The proposed project for the Brunico Transportation Center aims to upgrade the railway station zone of Brunico. Based on the building envelope program for the first phase of the competition, the new transportation center is planned at the location where the existing station currently stands. Main entry to the new transportation center, to platforms, to pedestrian and bicycle path connecting to Stegona all fall to the axis of Via Marconi. Access to train platforms, to “cars on rail” waiting area is proposed to be from the underpass which connects the transportation center to the zone for common facilities, to Rienza River and Stegona. New transportation center building, other facilities for road-based transportation company and also the retail and tertiary business of Metropolis zone are all contained in a linear building running parallel to the existing railroad tracks. The linear building is punctured by the void of entry to the center and by the bus departures waiting area that is canopied public outdoor space within the linear building. Residential volume of Metropolis zone takes place on the northern tip of the competition area that has easy pedestrian and bicycle access to historic downtown. Curved buildings of common facilities contain restaurant-bar, shops, discotheque and public lavatories on three floors on one wing, three floors of offices on the other wing. The underpass from the transportation center connects to a bridge above Via Santa Croce that leads to curved building along Rienza. A wide ramp and steps take pedestrians and cyclists down to river level where they find the grounds for temporary structures of a thousand year old tradition of Stegona Market and the paths for pedestrian and bicycle connection to downtown Brunico and to Stegona side. Curved building for common facilities with its open terraces intend to catch views of Rienza and Stegona and perform as entertainment and office center of Brunico. A small-scaled public plaza with circular amphitheater is proposed between the curved building and Rienza on the continuation of axis of Via Marconi and main entry of transportation center. A vehicular underpass connects the transportation center and Via San Lorenzo to bus hangar, freight yard and waiting lot for “cars on rail” tracks on the Stegona side of railroad tracks. Architectural expression of the transportation center aims to be plain, modern and feasible in terms of its architectural layout, selection of materials, detailing and use of steel post-beam construction system. All buildings of the transportation center are designed to operate based on natural ventilation and utilization of renewable energy sources with provision of mechanical ventilation systems employed in areas where necessary. Also, by phasing the construction, the railway station is to be kept operational at all times. Simple and constructive building forms are to provide high degree of flexibility in space planning and potential future modifications. The new center intends to reinforce and improve the ties between Stegona, Brunico and other towns that have an arrival or departure connection at the proposed transportation center. Towards this goal, proposed scheme for Brunico Transportation Center provides clarity, ease of orientation and ties with urban context as well as providing a smooth traffic flow to/from the center to/from downtown and surrounding neighborhoods while considering economic and technical issues. Executable and phased design decisions in a simple manner, choice of details and materials all will contribute to achieve lower construction and maintenance costs. | |
